Scooter’s Frozen Custard is a local favorite for its delicious custard. We talked to the Owner, Denny Moore, for a look into their story.
@properties Christie’s International Real Estate: When was Scooter’s Frozen Custard created?
Scooter’s Frozen Custard: Scooter’s opened its doors for the first time on June 19th, 2003.
@properties Christie’s International Real Estate: What is the back story to opening Scooter’s Frozen Custard?
Scooter’s Frozen Custard: Mardi and I were “between opportunities” after we were both very successful in the telecommunications field. Mardi was a regional sales rep for a Boston telecom software company, and I was a national account manager for a Houston-based telecom company. After months of playing golf, almost daily, we decided we were too young and too poor to be retired. That’s when we started looking for something else to do together.
@properties Christie’s International Real Estate: What is your favorite treat?
Scooter’s Frozen Custard: I am a big fan of a vanilla cone. It reminds me of the opening of our business plan. A recollection of going into town with my grandfather as a very small boy. Together we would each have a cone and go to the train station to watch the trains go by. Back then, they were the giant coal-burning, smoke-billowing commotions that I could not stop watching. These are my favorite memories of my time with my “grandpa”. I have always looked at our business as being “the memory business” because of that: families “making memories” enjoying something almost everyone seems to enjoy.
@properties Christie’s International Real Estate: What was the inspiration for Scooter’s Frozen Custard?
Scooter’s Frozen Custard: Mardi and I grew up in separate towns in McHenry County. However, we both traveled to the same frozen custard shop, between our two towns, when we were young. Mardi also attended Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana. Lafayette happens to be the location of the longest continuously running frozen custard shop in America. When she was in school, she and her friends would, in warm weather, pile into a car to go for some frozen custard. After considering other opportunities for self-employment, we agreed that frozen custard sounded like fun.
@properties Christie’s International Real Estate: What is your favorite part of owning Scooter’s Frozen Custard?
Scooter’s Frozen Custard: The many new friends we have made over the years who also happen to be our customers. The memories we are creating for families looking back at warm summer nights in the city. We both feel as though we have had a positive impact on the community in which we are located and on the young crew members who have worked for us over the years. Bright kids who have gone on to important careers in medicine, the law, finance, social services, and more. “Kids” that still visit with their own new families and reminisce about their time behind the counter.
