Rita’s Italian Ice is a new local favorite with its fun and welcoming atmosphere and delicious cool treats. We talked to the owner, Jill Spellman, for a look into their story.

@properties Christie’s International Real Estate:  When was Rita’s Italian Ice created?

Rita’s Italian Ice: Rita’s is a franchise started in Philadelphia by a fireman and his mom back in 1984.

@properties Christie’s International Real Estate: What is the back story to opening Rita’s Italian Ice?

Rita’s Italian Ice: Rita was his wife’s name! So cute, right? We serve Italian ice and custard (so much more delicious than ice cream).

@properties Christie’s International Real Estate: What is your favorite treat?

Rita’s Italian Ice:  My favorite treat is the Gelati. It is layers of custard and ice… you can choose any ice/any custard and layer them. Swedish Fish with vanilla custard, mint chocolate chip with twist custard… the choices are endless! Our flavors rotate daily. We have 4 choices of custard that we change biweekly!

@properties Christie’s International Real Estate: What was the inspiration for Rita’s Italian Ice and what is your favorite part of owning Rita’s Italian Ice?

Rita’s Italian Ice: My husband and I were looking to start our business. I grew up on the Southside and always loved Rainbow Cone… it was a staple in my childhood. Great memories made, memories of my Grandmother, etc.  I wanted that for our kids, the kids that live in Park Ridge and surrounding neighborhoods. Our motto is ICE, CUSTARD, HAPPINESS.  I truly believe we bring happiness to everyone that tastes our product!
