How to Celebrate Halloween 2020-Style

Halloween is upon us, and like many other 2020 festivities, it certainly doesn’t look like years past. Fortunately, there are still ways to get creative and celebrate this candy-filled holiday. Following are a handful of ideas on how to celebrate Halloween 2020-style. Remember that regulations and guidelines vary based on where you live, so be sure to check local websites and resources for the most relevant information.

Ditch the Candy Bowl

If you decide to dole out candy to trick-or-treaters this year, it’s best to ditch the candy bowl to avoid unnecessary hand contact. Instead of serving candy in a communal bowl, set up a table on your porch or in your driveway with individually wrapped candies or goody bags placed several inches apart. Be sure to wash your hands for at least 20 seconds prior to touching these treats, and encourage trick-or-treaters to grab their candy or bag one at a time.

Deliver Goody Bags

If it’s not possible to set up a table, organize a goody bag drop-off with your friends and neighbors. Everyone can put their own twist on their bags and showcase their personality using a special theme or favorite candy. Be sure to only include wrapped candies to prevent any contamination, and follow social distancing guidelines when it’s time to drop off your baggies.

Organize a Parade

For those trying to avoid any in-person interactions with members outside of their household, consider organizing a car parade with your friends and neighbors. Put on your best costume, decorate your car with Halloween-themed lights and decor, and take to the streets for a socially distanced Halloween parade.

Head to Zoom

Zoom has become a trusted source for safe gatherings in 2020. Download a Halloween-themed background, don your favorite costume, and join your pals online for an evening of scary stories and games. You can also have a virtual Halloween cocktail– or treats-decorating contest, and see who has carved the best jack-o-lantern.

Plan a Scavenger Hunt

Scavenger hunts became one of our favorite past-times this summer, and we think it can be a fun way to celebrate this holiday too. In the spirit of the season, plan a Halloween-inspired adventure. On-theme ideas include finding a pumpkin, a skeleton, a bat, and a jack-o-lantern.

If you are less comfortable with a neighborhood-wide scavenger hunt, set one up inside the various rooms of your home and get creative with your riddles and clues. You can even add candy into the mix!

As a reminder, the CDC recommends wearing a mask with your costume and following social distancing guidelines to prevent the spread of COVID-19. For more information on your county’s regulations, visit www.Halloween2020.org. Stay safe, and have a Happy Halloween!
