How did you land in a real estate career?

I had often thought about getting my real estate license to do as a side gig but never had the time. After I decided to quit my previous career I was contemplating my next move and a friend, who was also an agent, suggested I get my license. Figured I’d give it a shot and here I am 2+ years later and loving it.

If this is a second career, what were you doing previous to real estate?

Before real estate I was in management consulting for 17 years, where I definitely learned a lot about client service, communication, organization and problem solving. I think those are invaluable skills in any industry and particularly in real estate; plus, I’m still consulting now, just in a different way.

What is your favorite part of working in real estate?

I love the tangible nature of the business and helping people. It’s particularly rewarding to help a first time homebuyer by educating them on both the process and properties and then ultimately helping them find a home they love.

What is one thing you literally could not do your job without?

My iPhone. *glances at phone for new messages* Does this need any further explanation?

Tell us the craziest thing that has ever happened to you on the job.

Let’s just say that showing units occupied by rental tenants can lead to all sorts of ‘interesting’ situations.

What is the best advice you’ve ever been given?

When I quit my last job (and career), I was trying to decide on my next move, a friend who had been in a similar situation told me to take my time and not rush into anything. He (roughly) said, “You’re trying to figure out what to do that will make you happy for the next 20+ years… what are a few extra months?”

What is one piece of advice you’d give to a new real estate agent?

It’s work. Show up every day and be consistent.

What are 3 words clients would use to describe you?

 Honest, driven & trustworthy.

At Home with Tim McLoughlin

What neighborhood do you live in?

Bucktown.

What do you love most about your neighborhood?

I’ve lived in Bucktown for a while now and I’ve enjoyed seeing it change over the years. I moved here because I felt like the area had a bit more grit, an interesting artist vibe and a lot of potential. The neighborhood has grown, cleaned up a bit and west of the expressway isn’t exactly the “black sheep” anymore, but I still think the area maintains some of it’s eclectic charm.

Describe your own first home.

I bought a rehabbed brick-two-flat in Bucktown about 15 years ago during the last housing boom. I was essentially house hacking, so I lived in one unit and rented out the other, which made it much easier to be a landlord and afford my mortgage. It also planted the seed for my interest in a career in real estate.

What is the first big-ticket item you bought when you moved into your current home?

I had speakers installed throughout my condo. Music is a big thing for me, so I had to have it everywhere!

How do you start each day?

Snooze. Shower. Breakfast. News. Meditate.

What did you eat for breakfast today?

A fruit & veggie smoothie (ripe avocado is the key to a creamy smoothie).

What is your favorite local restaurant? What is one amazing dish you always order/recommend?

The Paratha Tacos at En Hakkore on Damen are ridiculously good. The paratha bread shell is amazing! Pro tip: They come in orders of two, but split that between the spicy pork and Korean BBQ beef.

What do you read every single day?

The News App on my phone.

How do you stay involved in your community?

I’m on the board at a local urban farm in Garfield Park called Herban Produce. I’m not exactly a green thumb, but it’s a great way to support the community and help build local, sustainable agriculture options. Plus, we’ve started throwing some great events like the Farm to Turntable series, which combines music, art and food. The series will be back next summer, so keep an eye out for the events from June through September!

If you won the lottery, which property would you buy?

I would probably find an old industrial or loft space with access to outdoor space then convert it. I like the character of something that has some history and quality craftsmanship, plus the perks of a modern home.

If I weren’t a real estate agent, I would be…

I’d love to own a music venue. I’ve got plenty of thoughts on this if anyone ever wants to chat about it.
