At Work with Sue Teper
How did you land a career in real estate?
I loved sales, so when we bought our first condo, real estate seemed like a natural fit for me. I enjoyed learning about up-and-coming neighborhoods and different homes styles. My degree is in education so teaching my clients about the market and the buying/selling process came easily.
What were you doing previous to real estate?
I was in sales and marketing for Bacardi rum, the #1 selling distilled spirit in the world. The company commanded very high standards for excellence and work ethic to achieve the goals for making quotas.
What is your favorite part of working in this industry?
Creating new relationships with people each day. The majority of my business comes from past clients and referrals. I consider my clients friends and love seeing them around town on a social basis.
What is one thing you literally could not do your job without?
My cell phone, it allows me to be available and accessible at all times.
What three things do you always bring with you to a showing?
Knowledge of the property and neighborhood, a positive attitude and my phone. It’s best to engage a buyer by being upbeat and positive. You never know when your paths will cross again.
What is one piece of advice you’d give to a new real estate agent?
Always maintain your integrity!
What are three words people would use to describe you?
My clients would say I’m energetic, passionate and diligent. My family would say I’m passionate, loving and consistent.
If I weren’t a real estate agent, I would be…
An actress
At home with Sue Teper
What neighborhood do you live in?
I live in Royal Ridge, a luxury gated residential community in Northbrook.
What do you love most about your neighborhood?
We love the location and the fact that its maintenance free. There is easy access to the city and it’s not too far from the airport. The gorgeous pool and exercise room make it an easy lifestyle.
What is your favorite local restaurant? Why? What is one amazing dish you always order/recommend?
Blu Fish! It’s a local restaurant, close to home with outstanding food and great service. We love the extra spicy tuna rolls and the blue Alaskan, which are our two favorite sushi rolls!
How do you start each day?
With a positive attitude and a large cup of hot coffee! Gives me a kick start.
What do you read every single day?
Chicago Bisnow, it’s a quick glimpse of what’s happening locally. I also view Crain’s Chicago business updates and the Chicago Tribune.
How do you stay involved in your community?
I try to spend locally at stores around town. I also volunteer my time and give to various charities that I am passionate about.
What is your proudest achievement to date? Personal, professional or give us both.
I would have to say my two amazing children! I have a daughter Jessica, who has her master’s degree in education. She lives in Kansas and is a full time special education teacher. I also have a son Sam, who is a financial analyst and lives downtown working with an investment real estate company. For my professional achievement, I am consistently a top producing agent in the North Shore year after year. I continue to grow and achieve my goals.
What is the best advice you’ve ever been given?
Be honest and truthful, remember to always treat people fairly. Always take the high road and do the right thing. Lend a hand to others that are less fortunate..

A coffee and Greek yogurt with honey.
