Shop local for the Pantone 2018 color of the year: ultra violet

Pantone recently announced its Color of the Year for 2018: Ultra Violet.

The color is “complex, contemplative and suggests the mysteries of the cosmos, the intrigue of what lies ahead and the discoveries beyond where we are now.” According to Pantone, purple shades have also been symbolic of counterculture, unconventionality and artistic brilliance.

It’s only a matter of time before you start seeing DIY projects centered around this trending color — and maybe even your neighbors painting their front doors ultra violet.

If you’re not sure that an ultra violet hued front door will resonate with buyers this spring, we have nine other ways for you to add the new Pantone color into your home — all sourced from some of our favorite Chicago home decor and furniture stores.

Add small accents

Amethyst clusters

These beautiful amethyst clusters from Jayson Home are perfect accents for a living room, bedroom or bookshelf.

Amethyst is believed to bring its possessor everything from calm and inner strength to an immunity from intoxication.

These violet-hued gemstones sit pretty on your shelves and look great paired with some air plants.

Agate coasters

Another great natural violet-hue is Agate. Not only does the purple-toned Agate have the bold ultra-violet tones but it breaks up the color with lighter tones of purple, and the gold edge gives it a refined touch.

You can find these beautiful purple Agate coasters at Jonathan Adler – another great way to add a small accent of color to a minimalist room design.

Purple core knobs

Scared of making an ultra violet commitment? I don’t blame you.

If you’re a fan of neutrals, ultra violet can be a very intimidating color at first. If you want to work something subtle into your aesthetic at home, try these purple core knobs from Studio 41.

Screw them onto your kitchen cabinets or give one of your dressers a little ultra-violet makeover. The best part is you can keep the old knobs and change them back whenever you want.

Add a pop of color

Plush tufted armchairs

This pair of plush tufted armchairs in purple velvet upholstery is a dream come true for ultra violet lovers.

From one of my favorite Chicago furniture stores, South Loop Loft, the pair is perfect for adding a pop of color to your space.

(FYI: South Loop Loft is currently moving to a new retail location so keep an eye out for the grand opening.)

Moroccan runners

I’ve been seeing Moroccan runners everywhere this year and I love them. It’s such a great way to add unexpected color to your boring floors to tie your space together.

My favorite thing about Moroccan runners is that they’re multicolored and have subtle pops of ultra violet without feeling too overwhelming.

This specific rug that’s pictured is from Canary Lane, a shop known for its travel to hunt down these beautiful vintage rugs along with pillows and other unique home decor pieces.

A bold sofa

If you’re ready to really splurge on the ultra violet trend, opt for the Madison Sofa from Haute Living. It’s available in a variety of upholstery and different legs, but the purple velvet with the walnut leg already has me sold.

Light it up

A table lamp with style

Lightology’s Bouche Table Lamp is a must-have for ultra violet lovers. It’s translucent so the color is subtle enough to work with whatever vibes you have going on in your space. It’s also a fun way to add some interesting pieces as well as light and color.

An LED art piece

This art piece from Orange Skin is the literal interpretation of Pantone’s color of the year. It’s composed of ultra violet LEDs, power-coated aluminum and woven nylon thread. The light reaction enables the thread to glow.

This is definitely a head-turning piece that’ll turn any wall into the center of attention.
